The difference between successful speakers and those that aren’t is the simple fact that successful speakers make decisions. They say Yes!

Decision making can be regarded as the mental processes (cognitive process) resulting in the selection of a course of action among several alternative scenarios. Every decision making process produces a final choice. -Wikipedia

First, you have to decide that you are worth it.  Your “I want a different life,” needs to be clarified. Make decisions and write down what you want.

  • What do you want in terms of money?
  • What do you want in your career?
  • What do you want in your spirituality… health… relationships… physical environment

The more specific you are, the more likely you’ll be to reach those goals.

People tend to make all kinds of excuses to not do something, particularly starting or growing their business.  Making excuses is also making decisions.  I wrote another blog post about excuses. (See: Think You Need Seed Money, Think Again)

Don’t let a job stand in your way either. Don’t make it an excuse why you can’t make more money. Make the decision to get up earlier and quit watching TV. Decide to drop things you’re doing that you only tolerate because it doesn’t add any value (even so called friends).  See if you can get some flex time on your job, such as going in earlier and leaving earlier. Put your lunch hour to good use and network then.

I hear it all the time…

  •        I don’t have enough hours in the day (we all have the same hours in a day)
  •        I live on a fixed income (then get out there and make more)
  •        I don’t have seed money to invest in a business (you don’t need startup money)

Stop focusing on what you don’t have versus what it is you want. Watch your conflicting conversations and actions. If you say you want to make more money, decide to do the things that will generate more money.  Doesn’t that make sense?

Here’s another decision to make:  A business isn’t a business until you get customers and start bringing in the cash. Make the decision to get out in your communities and find customers. Get offline and get involved. You’ve been misled by a lot of these Internet marketers that tell you to build your website and the customers will flock to you. No, that’s not going to happen by itself.

Decide to go get customers. (Go is the key word.)

It’s the same with home-based businesses. If you’re working out of your home, you need to realize there are no customers in your home. Decide to get out of your home, into your community, into networking and be really clear about what you’re selling.

Talk to people about how you’re going to help them. And do it every day, consistently.

Make the decision on how you’re going to make more money and wrap it up in a proper business plan. Decide to learn to market and sell, then put a team together to accomplish it all.

Most of you are thinking that you need to do all this yourself but you don’t know how. I learned business by hanging around people that knew how to run businesses. Go find business people and start networking with them. Associate with them. Build relationships with them. Learn from them.

Make the decision to be successful. Say Yes and figure out how.
